About[]

STF, distorted acronym for Star-Fleet.com, is a club for people who want to role play within a universe similar to, but not exactly like, the universe from Star Trek. The club has approximately 100 members from all over the world.

Sims are run solely on bulletin boards, with five fleets and an Academy to choose from. Most ships have a posting speed that falls under three categories: Slow, Average or Fast (there are exceptions) and each ship has its own unique character.

The boards readable by anyone, but an active account is required in order to post on any board. New members have the option of choosing to join an Academy ship or one in the Main Fleets.

We encourage all members to attend the Academy as STFs writing style though similar in many ways to the wider RP environment has its own unique styles, it is also a great opportunity to refine your skills and even later be selected as a DH for the Academy ship for future cadets.

Outside of IC role play, the club encourages creativity in many forms. Members can try designing a ship, a new piece of technology, or even an entire new race of aliens. Members can also take courses in the Academy, pass exams and gain promotions. Others still get involved in the day-to-day operations of the club through the many government positions.

Sims are run by Gamemasters, who all go through a training program and complete a training mission with the aide of an experienced Gamemaster Mentor. Some sims are also self contained by the crew usually led by the Command team.

There is also a social side to the club, which encompasses everything from political discussions to holy soda and jello wars. STF even has its own chat server within Discord, and many members actively participate.

Every eight months the members vote for a new President, who is elected from the membership. Nominated members conduct discussions and answer questions on a special and temporary Election Ship, where all members can read and participate. At the end of the Election Month all the members vote. Whether you listen to them platforms on or not is a members choice but voting is simply a matter of pressing a button once before posting, during the week of elections.

Leadership[]

Executive officers[]

The President and Vice President form the Executive Officers of the club. They are elected at the clubs general election which takes place every eight months.

Cabinet[]

Local Responsibility and certain administrative powers have devolved down to the Cabinet in recent years. The cabinet consists of the Fleet Commanders (FComms) and the Department Directors (QDirs). Together, they are responsible to the President for the day-to-day running of their department or fleet, as well as setting policy in line with the Club Bylaws.

X-Fleet[]

It is mandated as a place to try out new ideas and express creativity outside of the normal limits of STF. X-fleet is there to allow members to play a different side or just an entirely new environment within the realm of Star Trek.

A ship’s in X-Fleet existence is member-driven - whilst there at least five characters the area may continue to exist provided it is within the rules of the area.

Since its conception X-Fleet has seen great success with a variety of fun scenarios playing out - from the Mirror Universe to a stranded ship run by cadets making their way home against all odds. Recently, the X-Fleet had its first ship ever commissioned in the main fleets - the USS Leviathan.

Departments[]

Academy[]

Ships of the Academy are:

  • USS Challenger
  • USS Discovery (Mothballed)
  • USS Endeavour (Mothballed)

The goal of Starfleet Academy is to give members the tools to empower their roleplaying experience. The Ships in the Academy are designed to learn how to role play in a hands-on environment, new players get to role play in a protective environment at a speed of their choice so that they can fully experience the role-play experience whilst gaining knowledge and confidence before moving to the main fleets.

The Academy offers courses to improve your knowledge and ability which can be taken by all members of the club, the courses are as follows:

  • Command
  • First Officer
  • Department Head
  • Counselling
  • Engineering
  • Medical
  • Science
  • Security
  • Gamemaster (mandatory for GM Training)

Personnel Department[]

The Personnel Department is responsible for initial "IC" (in-character) assignments, and "OOC" (out of character) records. It is charged with the sometimes daunting task of allocating new accounts to new members, making initial ship assignments, ensuring compliance with the STF Terms of Service, and other tasks relating to members and their accounts. As such, it is probably the only department within STF that any member is guaranteed to have contact with at some time, even if that contact is just sending out the initial login details.

Gamemaster Department[]

The Gamemaster department is responsible for all the gamemasters in the club. Once a member submits a completed exam the gamemaster department marks the exam and returns it to the member. The gamemaster department then assigns the new Gamemaster Trainee to a ship with a Gamemaster Mentor so that they can complete their gamemaster training to become a Junior Gamemaster.

The Gamemaster department is also responsible for the gamemaster archives and submissions to the reference manual as well as its maintenance.

Engineering Department[]

STF Engineering Department, or ED. is the second oldest Department in STF, after the Personnel Department. Started in 1994, the ED was run under the administration of Mike Ballway for the first 2 years of its life. Since then, a large number of EDirs have come and gone, including STF notables such as Mike Cathcart, Randy McCullick, Owen Townes, and Colin Wyers. However, the purpose of the ED has been a constant in that time: to ensure all ships in STF have decent, usable specs. In its time, the ED has taken over other small divisions and sections. One of which is the Dockmaster (originally a Proto-ED in 1992), and the Department of Registry. These departments were originally in charge of keeping a list of which ships had which design, and making sure that registries (NCC numbers) weren't redundantly (or inappropriately) used. As these are really technical issues, both duties have been "assimilated" into the ED. The Dockmasters office still exists, but is really only used as the webmaster for the ED. A relatively new issue the ED handles is that of new technologies. Originally, designers could put what they wanted into specs and the technology became official if passed. However, more and more we saw that on occasion such technologies spawned redundancies, or that a ship spec would be held up because of a piece of bad tech. Thus, the ED also approves new tech independently of ship specs now.

Internet Department[]

The Internet Department, or IDept are the clubs Systems Administrators responsible for the administration of the server, housekeeping of the club's operating software WeBBSpace and dealing with helpdesk requests such as email forwarders and web directory access.
