Open Role Playing is a style of play-by-email and play-by-post role playing in which all players are permitted to write for all characters, including the other player-controlled characters. This contrasts with standard email and post role playing where players are not permitted to write for other player-controlled characters without permission. There are distinct advantages and disadvantages for both systems.

History

Open role playing has developed independently in multiple locations. Its most notable emergence was from the novice crew of Utopia Fleet's USS Sunfire in early 2000. Open role playing then become standard in early Independence Fleet, where it has remained popular ever since.
